understanding  NERVOUS

SYSTEM dysregulation.

Nervous system dysregulation causeS us to respond and react to external AND INTERNAL stimuli in a way that is often an over-reaction (outbursts, tantrums, anger, aggression) or under-reaction (passivity, withdrawal, shutting down) towards people, events and situations. Our state shapes our perception and influences our interactionS.

Over time, chronic nervous system dysregulation has a destructive influence on our health, AND Often leadS to a variety of mental health related concerns, such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, burn-out, poor attention, poor memory and addictionamongst other physical AND PHYSIOLOGICAL health ailments

consequences of

a DYSREGULATED

nervous system

  • The state of overwhelm is one of the most apparent signs of nervous system dysregulation. This can subsist as an underlying feeling even when you aren’t in a state of noticeable dysregulation and life seems to be going well.

  • Over time, if you have been experiencing chronic nervous system dysregulation, physical symptoms that seemingly have no apparent explanation or cause can arise. This is usually a sign you’ve been experiencing high levels of sympathetic arousal for an extended period.

  • You may find yourself extremely bothered by loud noises, crowds, and the emotional state of other people. You may have a strong reaction to pain and be easily irritated or stressed by small things that others don’t notice. Increased sensitivity, anxiety, depression and fear are also common signs of dysregulation.

  • You may often find yourself experiencing poor sleep, and during the day, may experience exhaustion, extreme fatigue, frequent yawning and difficulty concentrating.

  • You may experience trouble focusing on tasks at school or work, or even following along in a basic conversation. When the nervous system is on high alert, it is more difficult to concentrate, as our system is hyper-vigilant, consumed by seeking out potential threats or danger.

  • Many people who suffer from conditions like Rosacea and IBS, often have a dysregulated nervous system. They are often told to “reduce stress” or “change their lifestyle,” but have a hard time understanding what to do and how to heal.

  • Our nervous system regulates every system in the body. One of the most common symptoms of dysregulation is having a reduced or excessive immunological response to stressors, which includes hormonal imbalances.

  • A common sign of nervous system dysregulation is intense cravings and extreme appetite changes. You could be hungry all the time because your body’s stress hormones are in a constant stat of flux, which can cause appetite fluctuations.

causes  of

NERVOUS SYSTEM

dysregulation

  • CHRONIC STRESS IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF A DYSREGULATED NERVOUS SYSTEM. THE WAY WE INDIVIDUALLY PERCEIVE AND MANAGE STRESS PLAYS A CRITICAL ROLE IN THE WELLBEING OF OUR NERVOUS SYSTEM. FOR INSTANCE, POOR COPING STRATEGIES OR MALADAPTIVE BELIEFS CAN AMPLIFY THE BODY’S STRESS RESPONSE.

  • BOTH PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL TRAUMAS CAN LEAD TO NERVOUS SYSTEM DYSREGULATION. THIS INCLUDES EVENTS LIKE ACCIDENTS, SURGERIES, ABUSE, OR WITNESSING DISTRESSING EVENTS.

  • NEGATIVE EXPERIENCES DURING CHILDHOOD, SUCH AS NEGLECT, PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL ABUSE, OR LIVING WITH A FAMILY MEMBER WHO HAS MENTAL HEALTH OR SUBSTANCE USE ISSUES, CAN IMPACT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM AND CAUSE DYSREGULATION. MOREOVER, ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES OR UNRESOLVED EMOTIONAL TRAUMAS CAN CAUSE THE NERVOUS SYSTEM TO BE STUCK IN A STATE OF HYPERAROUSAL OR HYPOAROUSAL, LEADING TO DYSREGULATION.

  • Genetic factors can predispose individuals to a dysregulated nervous system. Certain gene variations can make people more susceptible to stress and anxiety, contributing to nervous system dysregulation.

  • POOR DIET, LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, AND INADEQUATE SLEEP CAN DISRUPT THE NORMAL FUNCTIONING OF OUR NERVOUS SYSTEM. IN PARTICULAR, STIMULANTS LIKE CAFFEINE AND ALCOHOL, AS WELL AS CERTAIN MEDICATIONS, CAN OVERSTIMULATE THE NERVOUS SYSTEM AND LEAD TO DYSREGULATION.

  • CERTAIN HEALTH CONDITIONS, SUCH AS AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES, CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME, FIBROMYALGIA, AND HORMONAL IMBALANCES, CAN CONTRIBUTE TO NERVOUS SYSTEM DYSREGULATION. IN RELATION TO NUTRITION, DEFICIENCIES IN CERTAIN NUTRIENTS ESSENTIAL FOR THE PROPER FUNCTIONING OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM CAN ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO ITS DYSREGULATION.

  • EXPOSURE TO TOXINS IN THE ENVIRONMENT, SUCH AS HEAVY METALS, PESTICIDES, MOLD, AND CERTAIN CHEMICALS, CAN NEGATIVELY IMPACT NERVOUS SYSTEM FUNCTION. ADDITIONALLY, ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSORS SUCH AS NOISE POLLUTION OR A HIGH-STRESS WORK ENVIRONMENT CAN ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO DYSREGULATION.

  • VIOLENT AND SCARY MEDIA (TV SHOWS/GAMES/FILMS) CAN CONTRIBUTE TO DYSREGULATION AS A RESULT OF OUR MIRROR NEURONS AT PLAY, WHICH CAUSES OUR HEARTS TO RACE AND OUR BREATHING TO BECOME MORE SHALLOW. ADDITIONALLY, AGGRESSIVE, FAST AND LOUD MUSIC CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT OUR NERVOUS SYSTEM EVEN LONG AFTER WE FINISH LISTENING.
