The Four States

How can the state of Regulation (Ventral) be described?

Regulation (Ventral) occurs when safety is sensed, fostering balance and wellbeing. In this state, people tend to feel calm, present and engaged, with an optimistic outlook that supports meaningful interaction with the world.
Narratives: “I Can” / “I’m Safe”
Feelings: Calm, happy, relaxed, secure and optimistic
Behaviors: Smiling, making eye contact, talking, listening and helping others
Thoughts: Clear, positive, grateful and balanced
Sensations: Softness, warmth, lightness, steady breath and steady heartbeat

How can the state of Activation (Sympathetic) be described?

Activation (Sympathetic) is triggered when danger is perceived, leading to heightened alertness and urgency. This state often creates a strong drive to take action and a sense of pressure to respond quickly. Narratives: “I Should” / “I Must”
Feelings: Anxious, stressed, irritable, restless and defensive
Behaviors: Pacing, fidgeting, rushing, snapping and avoidance
Thoughts: Racing, worried, distracted and problem-focused
Sensations: Fast heartbeat, tense muscles, sweaty palms and shallow breathing

How can the state of Depletion (Dorsal) be described?

Depletion (Dorsal) occurs when prolonged stress leads to energy conservation and withdrawal. In this state, motivation is low, and there’s often a strong urge to retreat. Narratives: “I Can’t” / “What’s the Point?”
Feelings: Tired, sad, numb, disconnected and unmotivated
Behaviors: Isolation, procrastination, avoidance and excessive sleep
Thoughts: Negative, hopeless, indecisive and confused
Sensations: Heavy body, coldness, low energy and sluggishness

How can the state of Overload (Freeze) be described?

Overload (Freeze) happens under extreme stress, leading to immobility and overwhelm. This state can create a feeling of being trapped, unable to take action. Narratives: “Too Much to Handle” / “I Need To, But I Can’t”
Feelings: Overwhelmed, panicked, frozen and fearful
Behaviors: Immobility, shutting down, holding breath and paralysis
Thoughts: Worst-case scenarios, hopelessness and fear
Sensations: Tight chest, racing heart, shaky hands and shallow breathing
